        Susan Hancock was born in the South Island of New Zealand and educated at the University of Canterbury and at Oxford She came to Australia in 1965 after a year in Uganda She has deep connections with both New Zealand and the United Kingdom She lectured in English Literature at La Trobe University for a number of years and has worked as an academic at the University of Melbourne, and has studied the works of D.H Lawrence She began writing and publishing fiction in 1986 Three of the stories in her first collection of short stories, Sailing Through the Amber, have won short fiction awards, including the Auckland Sunday Star Times Short Story Award 1994 for Windsong reprinted in Sunday 22 Vintage, 2006 Sailing Through the Amber was shortlisted for the 1996 Steele Rudd Award Her novel The Peastick Girl, set in New Zealand, was published in 2012.
